Writing task 2: Major cities growing fast. Problems and solutions

 

The major cities in the world are growing fast, as well as their problems. What are the problems that young people living in cities are facing? Give solutions to these problems.

As major cities around the world continue to expand, many young people are finding it increasingly difficult to adapt to urban life. The rapid growth of cities has brought several challenges for younger generations, particularly in terms of housing, employment, and mental well-being. However, there are practical solutions that can help improve their quality of life.

One of the main problems young people face in big cities is the high cost of living, especially in terms of housing. Many cannot afford to rent or buy a home near their workplace or university, which forces them to live far away and endure long commutes. In addition, competition for jobs in urban areas can be intense, leaving many young adults underemployed or working in temporary positions that offer little job security. These pressures can lead to stress, social isolation, and even mental health issues such as anxiety or depression.

To address these issues, governments and city planners need to take action. Affordable housing schemes, such as subsidised rental units or shared living spaces, can help reduce the financial burden on young people. At the same time, cities should invest in efficient and affordable public transport to shorten commuting times. On the employment side, offering job training and career support programmes tailored to young workers can help them develop the skills needed for stable careers. Finally, raising awareness of mental health and providing accessible counselling services can support young people struggling with the emotional demands of urban life.

In conclusion, while urbanisation creates significant challenges for young people, particularly in housing, employment, and mental health, targeted support and thoughtful planning can go a long way in helping them thrive in the city.

An important decision you have made   One of the most important decisions I’ve ever made was choosing to switch my major from Business Administration to English Education during my second year of university. At first, I enrolled in business because it seemed like a safe and practical choice. But after one year of studying, I realized that I wasn’t passionate about it at all.
