Writing task 2: Formal education at a very early age
Some people think that children should begin their formal education at a very early age. Some think they should begin at least 7 years old. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
There is ongoing debate about the appropriate age for children to start formal education. While some argue that beginning school at an early age helps children gain a head start, others believe that delaying formal learning until at least the age of seven leads to better long-term outcomes. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting a personal opinion.
On the one hand, those in favour of early education believe that the sooner children are introduced to academic learning, the better prepared they will be for future challenges. Early schooling can help develop basic literacy and numeracy skills, which form the foundation for later academic success. In addition, formal education at a young age may help children develop social skills, discipline, and study habits early in life. Supporters of this view often point to competitive education systems, where starting early is seen as essential to keeping up.
On the other hand, some argue that young children benefit more from play-based learning and unstructured exploration during their early years. According to this view, formal education before the age of seven may place unnecessary pressure on children, potentially leading to stress and reduced motivation. Countries such as Finland, where children start school later, often produce strong academic results, suggesting that early formal education is not the only path to success. Delaying school entry may allow children to develop emotionally and socially before facing the demands of structured learning.
In conclusion, while early education has its advantages, I believe that starting formal schooling closer to age seven is more beneficial. A later start allows children to grow in confidence, curiosity, and independence, which are essential qualities for lifelong learning.
